Revive a Sunnah: Keeping the Tongue Moist with the Dhikr of Allah

Anas (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) passed by a tree whose leaves were dry. He hit the tree with his stick and the leaves of the tree scattered. He (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) (then) said:

“Al Hamdulillahi wa Subhaan Allaah wa La ilaha ilallaahu wa-Allaahu Akbar - (this statement) removes sins from the slave of Allaah like the (falling) leaves of this tree.”

Collected by at-Tirmidhi 5/544; classed as hasan by al-Albani (rahimahullah)

1. The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) used the most perfect example to illustrate a point, which was simple, concise and easy to remember. This is the kind of (practical) examples we should employ when trying to communicate points effectively.

2. Dhikr is the lifeline of a Muslim that leads to salvation. Allaah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) says: "…and the men and the women who remember Allaah much with their hearts and tongues. Allaah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward." [translation of al-Ahzab:35]

3. Allaah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) has provided infinite ways and means to attain His Mercy and Forgiveness - through speech and action. An example amongst countless others:

- The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “Whoever says Subhan Allaahi wa bi-Hamdihi one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they are like the foam of the sea." [Saheeh Bukhari, 8/414]

- The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) is reported to have said, "Verily, when the worshipper stands to perform salah, all of his sins are placed on his head and shoulders, so whenever he bows or prostrates his sins fall off from him." * [Saheeh al-Jaami, no. 1671]

* This is from amongst the reasons why a Muslim should prolong his/her rukoo' and sujood.

4. As Muslims, we need to learn and seek the ways that lead to removal of sins and increase of good deeds - thus leading to Allaah's Pleasure.

Revive a Sunnah: Heavy on the Scale

Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “There are two statements that are light for the tongue to remember, heavy in the Scales and are dear to the Merciful:

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ

`Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi, Subhan-Allahil-Azim
[Glory be to Allah and His is the praise, (and) Allah, the Greatest is free from imperfection)’.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

 Riyad-ul-Saliheen Commentary:

This Hadith affirms that man’s actions carry weight. On the Day of Judgement, his actions will be cast into the Balance. At that time Allah will endow these actions with weight, or according to some scholars, those records which register man’s actions will be weighed. This is quite possible for the reason that Almighty Allah is Capable of weighing things without even their physical form. This discussion apart, when actions will be cast into the Balance, the formula mentioned in the Hadith, the utterance of which is very easy, will prove weighty. Every Muslim should make it a practice to repeat them frequently.

Revive a Sunnah: Using the Right Hand

Hafsah [radi Allahu anha], the wife of the Prophet [sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam], reported that the Prophet [sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam] used to use his right hand for eating, drinking and getting dressed and his left hand for everything else. [Abu Dawood]

Imam Nawawi [rahimahullaah] explains that every honorable thing should be performed with the right hand, and everything that is not honorable should be performed with the left hand. For example, eating should be done with the right hand, whereas cleaning ourselves after using the washroom should be done with the left hand.

Also, the inverse of something honorable should be done with the left hand or left side. For example, putting shoes, we should begin with the right shoe and taking them off, we should begin with the left shoe. And so on.

Some things we should do (or begin with) the right hand:

eating
putting on shoes (right shoe first, then left)
clothes (right side first, then left side)
glasses (open the right flap first, then the left…and close the left first and then the right)
brushing teeth
receiving something
giving something

Revive a Sunnah: Reciting Surah Al-Mulk

The Virtues of Reciting Surah al-Mulk

The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “There is a soorah of the Qur’an, thirty verses long, which will intercede for a man until he is forgiven. It is the soorah [which begins with the words] ‘Tabaarak alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk… (Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion…).’” ~~ Classed as hasan by Shaykh al-Albaani (rahimahullah) in Saheeh Sunan at-Tirmidhi.

Jaabir (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) would not go to sleep until he had recited “Alif, Laam, Meem. [This is] the revelation of the Book” [Soorat as-Sajdah] and “Tabaarak alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk… (Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion…)” [Soorat al-Mulk]. ~~ Classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani rahimahullah) in At-Tirmidhi.

An-Nasaa’i narrated that Ibn Mas‘ood (radi Allahu anhu) said: “Whoever recites ‘Tabaarak alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk… (Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion…)’ [Soorat al-Mulk] every night, Allah will protect him [mana‘ahu] thereby from the punishment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam), we used to call it al-maani‘ah (the protector). It is a soorah in the Book of Allah which, whoever recites it every night, he will have done a great deal and done well.” ~~ Classed as hasan by Shaykh al-Albaani (rahimahullah) in Saheeh at-Targheeb wa’t-Tarheeb.

The book name: The Lost Treasure (Arabic Edition) - will be given in English by Mustafa Hosni (Author)
The book deals with a number of sacred Hadiths (Qudsi Hadiths) which Allah, Exalted be He, revealed upon Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, explaining His Divine Self and divine attributes. The book seeks to draw us a bit closer to Allah the Almighty, the One and only Lord of the Worlds and Creator, to know more of Him and His divine attributes as seen and felt everywhere. The hidden treasure as explained by the book is seeing Allah through our heart sight- seeing Him in everything and every creation. It is the secret paradise, which only the pious servants of Allah enjoy, in this worldly life. Hence you see them satisfied and content in trials and fortunes alike yet working hard to earn their living.
We hope it may benefit you, in sha Allah.

Revive a Sunnah: Istikharah (seeking Allaah's Counsel)

Jaabir bin Abdullah (radi Allahu anhu) said: The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) used to teach us to seek Allaah's Counsel in all matters, as he used to teach us a Surah from the Qur'an. He would say: When anyone of you has an important matter to decide, let him pray two Rak'ahs other than the obligatory prayer, and then say:

"O Allah, I seek the counsel of Your Knowledge, and I seek the help of Your Omnipotence, and I beseech You for Your Magnificent Grace. Surely, You are Capable and I am not. You know and I know not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter [then mention the thing to be decided] is good for me in my religion and in my life and for my welfare in the life to come, - [or say: in this life and the afterlife] - then ordain it for me and make it easy for me, then bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion and in my life and for my welfare in the life to come, - [or say: in this life and the afterlife] - then distance it from me, and distance me from it, and ordain for me what is good wherever it may be, and help me to be content with it."

Reported by al-Bukhari, 6841; similar reports are also recorded by al-Tirmidhi, al-Nisaa’i, Abu Dawood, Ibn Maajah and Ahmad

1. Salaat al-Istikharah is a means of achieving true submission [‘uboodiyyah] to Allaah and focusing the Muslim’s heart on Allah, and freeing him from feeling attached to other created beings.

2. Ibn Hajar said, commenting on this hadeeth: "Istikharah is a word which means asking Allah to help one make a choice, meaning choosing the best of two things where one needs to choose one of them." [Fath al-Baari, Kitab al-Da’waat and Kitaab al-Tawheed]

3. He also said: "The general meaning includes both major matters and insignificant ones. Perhaps an insignificant matter may result in something major." [Fath al-Baari (11/184)]

4. Al-‘Ayni said: "The words “in all things” are indicative of its general meaning, and that a man should not regard anything as too insignificant because it is small and not pay attention to it, and thus not pray istikhaarah or pray for guidance concerning it. He may regard something as insignificant but doing it or not doing it may lead to great harm. Hence the Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “Let one of you ask his Lord even with regard to his shoelace.” [‘Umdat al-Qaari (7/223)]

5. Ibn Abi Jamrah said: "It is a general phrase which refers to something specific. With regard to matters that are waajib (obligatory) or mustahabb (liked or encouraged), there is no need for istikharah to decide whether to do them, and with regard to matters that are haraam (forbidden) or makrooh (disliked), there is no need for istikharah to decide whether to avoid them. The issue of istikharah is confined to matters that are mubaah (allowed), or in mustahabb matters when there is a decision to be made as to which one should be given priority.’ I say: it refers to both great and small matters, and probably an insignificant issue could form the groundwork for a big issue."

6. Ibn al-Haaj al-Maliki said: "Some of them pray istikharah as prescribed in sharee’ah and then wait until they see a dream from which they will decide whether they should go ahead and do whatever they prayed istikharah about or not, or until someone else sees a dream for them. This does not count for anything, because the infallible one (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) told us to pray istikharah and consult others, not to rely on what is seen in dreams." [Al-Madkhal, 4/37]

7. Ibn Uthaymeen said: "Salaat al-istikhaarah is done when a person is thinking of something and is hesitant about the consequences, so he prays istikhaarah to Allaah, i.e., he asks Allaah for the better of the two options: going ahead with it or not doing it. But he should not pray istikhaarah with regard to everything, meaning that if a person wants to eat lunch he should say, I will pray istikhaarah about it, or if he wants to go and pray with the congregation in the masjid he should say, I will pray istikhaarah about it. Rather he should pray istikhaarah and ask Allaah for guidance about things of which he does not know the consequences..." [Liqaa’aat al-Baab il-Maftooh by Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (no. 85, question 1)]

8. Whoever seeks the counsel of the Creator will not regret it and whoever seeks the advice of the believers will feel confident about his decisions. Allah said in the Qur'an: "And consult them in the affair. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah."
