Revive a Sunnah: Invocation for Entering A Market Place

One million virtues + One million sins forgiven + One million grades raised

Laa ‘ilaaha ‘illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, yuhyee wa yumeetu, wa Huwa hayyun laa yamootu, biyadihil-khayru, wa Huwa ‘alaa kulli shay’in Qadeer.

None has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He brings life and He causes death, and He is living and does not die. In His Hand is all good, and He is Able to do all things.

It is stated in the hadith that if a person reads the above du’aa in the market place, Allaah writes ten lakh rewards for him and forgives ten lakh sins and raises his status by ten lakh, and a house is prepared for him in Jannah.

N.B. one lakh = 100,000 (Tirmidhi) Note: Whoever recites this du’aa [in the market place], Allaah will reward him with a million virtues (hasanah), forgive a million of his sins and elevate his rank by a million

[Reference: At-Tirmithi 5/291, and Al-Hakim 1/538. Al-Albani graded it good in Sahih Ibn Majah 2/21 and Sahih At-Tirmithi 3/152]

Revive a Sunnah: Expression most beloved to Allah

Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said to me, “Shall I tell you the expression that is most loved by Allah?” It is `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi’ (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise)’.” [Muslim].

سُبْحَان اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ

Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, “He who recites in the morning and in the evening the statement: `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with praising Him)’ one hundred times, will not be surpassed on the Day of Resurrection by anyone with better deeds than one who utters the same words or utters more of these words.” [Muslim].

Expression that is most loved by Allah

Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said to me, “Shall I tell you the expression that is most loved by Allah?” It is `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi’ (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise)’.”[Sahih Muslim].

Obliterating Sins of the extent of the foam of the ocean

Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, “And he who utters: `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise)’ one hundred times a day, his sins will be obliterated even if they are equal to the extent of the foam of the ocean.’‘[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary: Here sins mean minor sins and those which do not relate to the rights of people.

A Palm-tree will be planted in Jannah

Jabir (radi Allahu anhu) reported: The Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, “For him who says: `Subhan-Allahi wa bi hamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection, and I begin with praising Him, and to Him),’ a palm-tree will be planted in Jannah.”[At-Tirmidhi].

Commentary: Jannah is so vast that we cannot even imagine its vastness. The planting of trees in return for the Praise and Glorification of Allah is, therefore, neither something difficult nor surprising. So, there should not be any hesitation in accepting it as a fact. Some people take it is as a metaphor for a plentiful reward.

Revive a Sunnah: Dua during Recitation

Hudhayfah (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that,” Whenever the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) read a verse about Allah’s punishment, he would seek refuge in Allah. And whenever He read a verse mentioning Allah’s mercy, he would ask Allah for His mercy. Hudhayfah said, “Whenever the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) bowed he would say, “Subhana Rabbil Atheem.” and when He prostrated He’d say ,”Subhana Rabbil ‘Ala.”
Collected by Ahmed 6/ 24 , Abu Dawud 873, and others. Graded as being Hasan by Al-Albani

Benefits for this topic:

Shaykh Abdul Azeez bin Baz (raheemahullah) said:

It’s Sunnah for every muslim who reads the Quran during prayer or elsewhere to ask Allah for His bounty at the verses of mercy.

And when the Muslim reads a verse mentioning Allah’s punishment, he seeks refuge from the Hell-fire. Furthermore when a Muslim reads an ayah that deems Allah above something he declares it. He declares it by saying, “Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.”

It’s recommended for every Muslim who reads: Is not Allah the Best of judges? [At-tin 8] to say,” Indeed! I believe that to be true.” Moreover when he reads, “Is not He (Allah Who does that), Able to give life to the dead? (Yes! He is Able to do all things).[ Al-Qiyamah 40], he says, “Indeed!: I bear witness to this.” The servant should say, “I believe in Allah.” when he reads,” Then in what statement after this (the Qur’an) will they believe? [ Al-Mursaalat 50].

After the slave recites the verse, “Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinns and men) deny? [ Ar-Rahman 13] He says, “We don’t deny any verses from our Lord. And after reading ,”Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High,”[Al-A’la 1], he says,” Subhana Rabbil ‘Ala”

All of these acts are recommended for the Imam, followers , and individual reciting the Quran. These words are dua, and dua is wanted from the Muslim. This resembles the saying, “ Ameen” after Fatihah: and Ameen should be said in prayer and elsewhere after Fatiha.[ Majmu’ Fataawa Bin Baz vol 26 page 62-63

Revive a Sunnah: Du'a of Forgiveness in Tashahhud

"The Messenger of Allah (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) entered the masjid and there was a man who was finishing his salah and was reciting the tashahhud. (In the tashahhud [and before tasleem]), he recited:

اللَّهمَّ إنِّي أسألُكَ يا اللَّهُ الأحدُ الصَّمدُ الَّذي لم يلِد ولم يولَد ولم يكن لهُ كُفوًا أحدٌ أن تغفرَ لي ذنوبي إنَّكَ أنتَ الغفورُ الرَّحيمُ

"Allahumma inni as'aluka ya Allahu al-Ahadus Samad, Alladhi lam yalid wa lam yulad, wa lamya kunlahu kufuwan ahad, an-taghfirali dhunoobi, innaka antal-Ghafoorur-Raheem"

"O Allah, I ask of You, O Allah, as You are the One, the Only, the Self-Sufficient Master, Who begets not nor was He begotten, and there is None equal or comparable to Him, forgive me my sins, for You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

The Messenger of Allah (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) (upon hearing his du'a) said (thrice), "He has been forgiven, he has been forgiven, has been forgiven."

[Sunan Abi Daw'ud, 985' An-Nasaa'i, 1301 and others. Al-Albani said it was saheeh upon the condition of Imam Muslim (Sifatus-Salah, 3/1015)]

There are numerous du'a that people use in their tashahhud. Here we have a most beautiful du'a, which the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) himself profoundly vouched for (the person he heard reading it). It thus comes highly recommended we do the same, or at least alternate between this and other established du'a we may know.

Revive a Sunnah: Prostration of Gratitude - Sujood ash-Shukr

Abu Bakra (radi Allahu anhu) narrated: When happiness about something reached the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) or good news, He (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) would prostrate to Allah to show thankfulness.”

Collected by Abu Dawud, 2776; Al-Albani classed it Saheeh.

1. Ibn Al-Qayyim said, “It’s from the guidance of the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) to offer a prostration of thanks to Allah whenever a blessing is granted or a trial and affliction is lifted. [Zaad al Maad, 1/270]

2. The four Imams considered Sujood ash-Shukr as being Sunnah.

- Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (radi Allahu anhu) prostrated when Musayleemah the liar was killed.

- Ka’b ibn Malik (radi Allahu anhu) prostrated when Allah forgave him.

3. Ibn Taymiyyah said, Purification isn’t a condition to offer Sujudus Shukr. This is derived from the verse about Firawn’s magicians who prostrated after believing in Allah. They didn’t have Wudu prior to their belief. Here we understand that prostration is what Allah loves and is pleased with. Legislation for those before us is legislation for us as long as there’s no contradiction between the two.

4. A person can offer Sujood ash-Shukr whether standing or not.

5. Takbeer: saying “Allahu Akbar” isn’t mentioned that the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) did it before prostrating.

6. There is no specific Dhikr or supplication for Sujood ash-Shukr. The person should thank Allah, ask forgiveness, and make du'a while prostrating.

Revive a Sunnah: Receive a good deed for every believing man and woman

Shaykh Abdur Razzaq:

The statement of the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam):

Whoever seeks forgiveness for the male and female Muslims, he will receive for himself a good deed for each and every one of them.

Look! Whoever seeks forgiveness for the male Muslims and the female Muslims, he will receive for himself a good deed for each and every one of them. Do you know how many good deeds you will receive if you say in your supplication?:

اللَّهُمَّ اغفِر لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ والْمُسْلِمَاتِ وَالمُؤمِنِينَ وَالمُؤمِنَاتِ، الأَحيَاءِ مِنهُم وَالأَموَاتِ

O Allah, forgive the male and female Muslims, and the male and female believers, the living and the deceased.

A phrase which is not even one line; how many good deeds will you receive? Count from Adam until Allah inherits the earth and all those upon it. You will receive a good deed for every Muslim; millions of good deeds. Then you supplicate for them to have guidance, firmness, assistance, success, and safety from trials and tribulations. If this supplication comes from your heart this is proof of the soundness of your heart and conscience for the welfare of your Muslim brother.

Translator’s note: Below is another wording of the Hadith which has been declared Hassan by Shaykh Al Albani

‘Whoever seeks forgiveness for the believing men and believing women, Allah writes a good deed for him for every believing man and woman.’

Revive a Sunnah: Response to Fighting or Abuse When Fasting

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, “Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, ‘I am fasting.” The Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) added, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), ‘He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times.”

Revive a Sunnah: Dua When Breaking Fast at Someone’s Home

Narrated Anas ibn Malik, The Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) came to visit Sa’d ibn Ubaydah, and he brought bread and olive oil, and he ate (them). Then the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:

أَفْطَرَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُونَ وَأَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمُ الأَبْرَارُ وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ

afṭara ‛indakum-uṣ–ṣaa’imoona wa akala ṭa‛aamakum-ul-abraaru, wa ṣallat ‛alaykum-ul-malaa’ikah

May the fasting break their fast with you, and the pious eat your food, and the angels pray for blessing on you.

Revive a Sunnah: Hasten to Break the Fast

The Messenger of Allah (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:
“The people will continue to be in a good state as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

It was narrated that Anas ibn Maliksaid: “The Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) used to break his fast before praying by eating fresh dates, and if there were no fresh dates he would eat dried dates; if there were no dried dates, he would have a few sips of water.” (al-Sawm, 632; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, no. 560)

Al-Mubaarakfoori  said in his commentary on the hadeeth: “This indicates the lengths to which the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) went in order to hasten to break his fast.”

So we should break our fast with something small before we pray Maghrib after which we have our meal inshaallah.

Revive a Sunnah: Delaying the Suhoor

The Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: “If one of you hears the call to prayer (Adhan) and the vessel is in the hand of one of you, then let him not put it down until he fulfills his need from it.”

Reported by Abu Daw'ud.

1. Al-Albani (may Allah grant him Al-Firdaus) said: "And what is meant here by the call is the second call, the second Adhaan. It is not the first Adhaan, which they wrongly call the Adhaan for withholding (al-Imsaak). We must know that there is no basis for calling the first Adhaan the Adhaan for withholding (imsaak)."

2. The second Adhaan is when we are to withhold, and this is clearly stated in the Qur'an, since Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes clear to you from the black thread of the night."

3. There occurs in the hadeeth agreed upon by al-Bukharee and Muslim, from the hadeeth of Abdullaah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) that the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Let not the Adhaan of Bilaal deceive you," meaning, the first Adhaan, "because he gives the Adhaan in order to awaken the person who is sleeping, and so that the person who wishes to eat the pre-dawn meal can do so. So eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktoon gives the Adhaan."

4. It is opposition to Allah and to the Messenger that a person says that one who hears the adhaan whilst he has food in his mouth must spit it out upon the ground. This is not from the Sunnah. Rather this is contrary to the Sunnah, and is contrary to the clear command of the Messenger (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).

[Taken from "Silsilah al-Hudaa wan-Noor, Tape No. 590 "]

The Neglect: What happens today is totally contrary to this. Many people eat their Suhoor an hour before Fajr or withhold from food and drink 15 minutes or so before dawn. This is not befitting. This is contrary to the Sunnah – the saying of the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and his practice.

The Sunnah: The companions of the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) used to eat the Suhoor so late that one of them would almost hear the Adhan and he would still be eating because he had delayed the Suhoor.

Revive a Sunnah: “Oh Allāh, I ask from You guidance, piety, purity and sufficiency”

by Al-Istiqaamah Research And Translation

On the authority of ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd (radi Allahu anhu) the Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) would supplicate saying:
"اللهم إني أسألك الهدى والتقى والعفاف والغنى"

“Oh Allāh, I ask from You guidance, piety, purity and sufficiency”.

Revive a Sunnah

In the name of Allah
Revive a Sunnah: Most Often Recited Dua

This is one of the Duas that most Muslims recite daily in their prayers and outside their prayers. This Dua is not only mentioned in the Quran but Prophet Muhammad (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) advised us of the many merits of this Dua.
Ibn Al-Kathir also mentions in his tafsir that the Sunnah encourages us reciting this Dua (i.e., in the Ayah about gaining a good deed in this life and the Hereafter).

Anas reported: The supplication most often recited by the Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) was:

اللهم آتنا في الدنيا حسنة، وفي الآخرة حسنة، وقنا عذاب النار

Allahumma atina fid-dunya hasanatan, wa fil-akhirati hasanatan, wa qina ‘adhab-annar

(O our Rubb! give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the punishment of the Fire)

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

In the narration of Muslim it is added that whenever Anas supplicated, he used to beseech Allah with this Du’a.

Dua for life and death

(O Allah, our Lord! Give us that which is good in this life, that which is good in the Hereafter and save us from the torment of the Fire.)

The Quran states it in the following verse: And of them there are some who say: “Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!” Quran: Surah Al-baqarah (201)

Ibn Al-Kathir states that the supplication mentioned and praised in the verse includes all good aspects of this life and seeks refuge from all types of evil. The good of this life concerns every material request of well-being, spacious dwelling, pleasing mates, sufficient provision, beneficial knowledge, good profession or deeds, comfortable means of transportation and good praise, all of which the scholars of Tafsir have mentioned regarding this subject. All of these are but a part of the good that is sought in this life. As for the good of the Hereafter, the best of this includes acquiring Paradise, which also means acquiring safety from the greatest horror at the gathering place. It also refers to being questioned lightly and the other favors in the Hereafter.

As for acquiring safety from the Fire, it includes being directed to what leads to this good end in this world, such as avoiding the prohibitions, sins of all kinds and doubtful matters.

Al-Qasim bin `Abdur-Rahman said, “Whoever is gifted with a grateful heart, a remembering tongue and a patient body, will have been endowed with a good deed in this life, a good deed in the Hereafter and saved from the torment of the Fire.”

Imam Ahmad reported that Anas said, “Allah’s Messenger visited a Muslim man who had become as weak as a sick small bird. Allah’s Messenger (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said to him, `Were you asking or supplicating to Allah about something’ He said, `Yes. I used to say: O Allah! Whatever punishment you saved for me in the Hereafter, give it to me in this life.’ Allah’s Messenger (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: (All praise is due to Allah! You cannot bear it -or stand it-. You should have said: (Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!)) The man began reciting this Dua and he was cured.” [Sahih Muslim also recorded it.]

In conclusion, as mentioned by Al-Qasim bin `Abdur-Rahman above, let us strive to have a grateful heart, a remembering tongue and a patient body.

Revive a Sunnah: Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays; 3 Days every Month; and the Ayyam al Beed (13th, 14th and 15th of each month)

It was narrated that `Aishah (radi Allahu anha) said: “The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) was keen to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.” [Tirmidhi, 745; al-Nasaa’, 2361; Ibn Maajah, 1739; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1044]

The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) was asked about fasting on Mondays. He said: “On that day I was born, and on it the Revelation came to me.” [Muslim, 1162]

The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) mentioned that: “The deeds of the worshipers are presented before Allah on Monday and Thursday, I like my deeds to be presented while I am fasting.” [Nasa’i]

It was narrated that Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said to me: “If you fast any part of the month, then fast the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.” [Tirmidhi, 761; al-Nasaa’i, 2424; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1038]

It was narrated from Jareer ibn ‘Abd-Allah (radi Allahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “Fasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime, and ayaam al-beed are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.” [Nasaa’i, 2420; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1040]

Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu) said: My close friend [the Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam)] advised me to do three things which I will not give up until I die: fasting three days of each month, praying Duha and going to sleep after Witr." [Bukhari, 1124; Muslim, 721]

‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas (radi Allahu anhu) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said to me: “It is sufficient for you to fast three days every month, because for every good deed you will have (the reward of) ten like it, so that will be like fasting for a lifetime.” [Bukhaari, 1874; Muslim, 1159]

1. Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (rahimahullah) said: "It is permissible to fast these days (i.e. the 3 days a month) one after the other or separately, and they may be at the beginning of the month, or in the middle, or at the end. The matter is broad in scope, praise be to Allah, because the Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) did not state any specific days. ‘Aa’ishah (radi Allahu anha) was asked: Did the Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) fast three days of each month? She said: Yes. It was asked: In which part of the month did he fast? She said: He would not bother in which part of the month he would fast. Narrated by Muslim, (1160). But the 13th, 14th and 15th are better, because these are al-ayyaam al-beed." [Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 10/#376]

Revive a Sunnah: It is Recommended to Fast a Great Deal in the Month of Sha’baan

Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I asked the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) a question.” I asked why do you fast in Sha’ban more than any other month? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied saying; 'People are negligent between Rajab and Ramadan. During Sha’ ban the deeds are presented to the Lord of all the worlds. Therefore, I desire to be fasting when my deeds are lifted.”

(Collected by Ahmad; 5/200; An-Nisa’i, 2357; Al-Bayhaqee in Shub Al-Iman, 3820; and Ibn Abi Shaybah in his Musanaf, 9765. Al-Albani (may Allah grant him al Firdaus) and Muhammad Adam (may Allah preserve him) both graded this hadeeth as Hasan (see Saheeh al-Nasaa’i, 2221)

1. It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast the whole of Sha’baan.

Ahmad (26022), Abu Dawood (2336), al-Nasaa’i (2175) and Ibn Maajah (1648) narrated that Umm Salamah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fast two consecutive months apart from the fact that he used to join Sha’baan and Ramadaan.”

According to a version narrated by Abu Dawood: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) never used to fast any complete month in the year, apart from Sha’baan, which he used to join to Ramadaan.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 2048.

The apparent meaning of this hadeeth is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast the entire month of Sha’baan.

2. It is also narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast all of Sha’baan apart from a few days.

Muslim (1156) narrated that Abu Salamah said: “I asked ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) about the fasting of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and she said: ‘He used to fast until we thought that he would always fast, then he would not fast until we thought that he would always not fast, but I never saw him fast in any month more than he fasted in Sha’baan. He used to fast all of Sha’baan, and he used to fast all of Sha’baan apart from a few days.’”

3. The scholars differed as to the way of reconciling between these hadeeths.

Some of them said that this had to do with differences of time – in some years the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted all of Sha’baan, and in other years he fasted all of that month apart from a few days. This was the view favoured by Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him). See Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 15/416.

Others said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) never fasted any month in full apart from Ramadaan, and they interpreted the hadeeth of Umm Salamah as meaning that he fasted all of Sha’baan apart from a few days. They said that this is possible from a linguistic point of view, that if a man fasts for most of a month it may be said that he fasted the whole month.

And Allah knows best.

Anas (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) passed by a tree whose leaves were dry. He hit the tree with his stick and the leaves of the tree scattered. He (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) (then) said:

“Al Hamdulillahi wa Subhaan Allaah wa La ilaha ilallaahu wa-Allaahu Akbar - (this statement) removes sins from the slave of Allaah like the (falling) leaves of this tree.”

1. The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) used the most perfect example to illustrate a point, which was simple, concise and easy to remember. This is the kind of (practical) examples we should employ when trying to communicate points effectively.

2. Dhikr is the lifeline of a Muslim that leads to salvation. Allaah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) says: "…and the men and the women who remember Allaah much with their hearts and tongues. Allaah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward." [translation of al-Ahzab:35]

3. Allaah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) has provided infinite ways and means to attain His Mercy and Forgiveness - through speech and action. An example amongst countless others:

- The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “Whoever says Subhan Allaahi wa bi-Hamdihi one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they are like the foam of the sea." [Saheeh Bukhari, 8/414]

- The Prophet (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) is reported to have said, "Verily, when the worshipper stands to perform salah, all of his sins are placed on his head and shoulders, so whenever he bows or prostrates his sins fall off from him." * [Saheeh al-Jaami, no. 1671]

* This is from amongst the reasons why a Muslim should prolong his/her rukoo' and sujood.

4. As Muslims, we need to learn and seek the ways that lead to removal of sins and increase of good deeds - thus leading to Allaah's Pleasure.

Revive a Sunnah: Heavy on the Scale

Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “There are two statements that are light for the tongue to remember, heavy in the Scales and are dear to the Merciful:

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ

`Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi, Subhan-Allahil-Azim
[Glory be to Allah and His is the praise, (and) Allah, the Greatest is free from imperfection)’.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

 Riyad-ul-Saliheen Commentary:

This Hadith affirms that man’s actions carry weight. On the Day of Judgement, his actions will be cast into the Balance. At that time Allah will endow these actions with weight, or according to some scholars, those records which register man’s actions will be weighed. This is quite possible for the reason that Almighty Allah is Capable of weighing things without even their physical form. This discussion apart, when actions will be cast into the Balance, the formula mentioned in the Hadith, the utterance of which is very easy, will prove weighty. Every Muslim should make it a practice to repeat them frequently.
